BBC Alba, operated jointly by the BBC and MG Alba, is now available on satellite in HD for the first time.
As part of the ongoing plan to fully switch all BBC channels from standard to high definition broadcasts. The HD version of BBC Alba has now taken the place of the standard definition on the EPGs of compatible Sky and Freesat receivers.
Non compatible receivers will continue to receive the standard definition version for the time being, but will eventually lose access to BBC Alba, as the BBC switches off standard definition broadcasts.
BBC Alba is now also available on BT TV (internet mode), Virgin Media, and Sky Glass in HD. Only Freeview and iPlayer streams remain in standard definition for now, in the case of Freeview this is due to a lack of available bandwidth (space) on the frequencies used to broadcast terrestrial TV.
